Fight for life after train crash

The car was reportedly pushed 200m down the train line.

A 20-YEAR-OLD woman is fighting for her life after her car was pushed 200 metres down the railway track when it was struck by a train at an Officer crossing.
Pakenham police Sergeant Nathan Prowd said the driver was in a critical but stable condition after being trapped in her Suzuki Swift for an hour at the Brunt Road intersection.
He said the crossing’s boom gates were working at the time.
“It is my understanding she is still in a medically induced coma suffering significant injuries,” he said on Monday.
The driver was airlifted to The Alfred hospital.
A Pakenham SES crew of 13 was called to the scene at 11.47am.
“Rescuers were required to stabilise the car and work with paramedics to find the best solution to free the driver as well as being able to treat her as the rescue was being performed,” SES unit member Shayne Honey said.
The cause of the collision is being investigated.
Ambulance crews were called to the scene at 12.45pm.
An ambulance spokesperson said the driver had sustained head injuries and possible fractures.
Yesterday (Tuesday) an Alfred hospital spokesperson said the driver was in a critical condition.
