Who will get our top nod

By BEN CAMERON

NOMINATIONS for next year’s Cardinia Shire’s Australia Day Awards have been extended until 5pm, Friday 28 November.
Cardinia Shire mayor Leticia Wilmot said the council wanted to give the community the best opportunity to recognise its valuable volunteers.
“Volunteering is something I am personally very passionate about. I believe it is the backbone of our community,” she said.
“The Australia Day awards are a fantastic way to show the community’s appreciation and celebrate the achievements of the individuals or groups who always go above and beyond.”
“If you know someone who generously gives their time for our community, I encourage you to acknowledge their efforts and nominate them for an Australia Day award.”
Nominations can be made for: Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Community Service Award (for a significant contribution by a resident outside Cardinia Shire) and Community Organisation of the Year.
The event will be held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Monday 26 January, which will also include a citizenship ceremony.
Recipients of Australia Day Awards in 2014 were Matt McDonald (Citizen of the Year), John ‘Jack’ Mitchell (Senior Citizen of the Year), Adele Mepstead (Young Citizen of the Year), Lyn Wealands (Community Service Award), PAVE Festival (Community Event of the Year) and ECHO Youth and Family Services (Community Organisation of the Year).
For a nomination form or nomination guidelines, visit the ‘Awards and ceremonies’ webpage of the council’s website or council offices to collect a nomination form.
