Casey meets cycling criteria

SCHOOL against school, rider versus rider… the challenge begins next weekend.
Fresh off the success of the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships, Cycling Victoria has launched the Victorian Interschool Cycling Series (VICS), a battle between the schools and students to see which college can rise to the top.
The seven-leg series takes riders to criteriums and venues around Victoria to test their mettle against the best peddlers in the state.
Tour de France yellow jersey wearing champion Simon Gerrans is the ambassador of the series and believes every pedal stroke a cyclist takes is one that could be the difference between becoming a world champion.
“Cycling is an amazing sport and has taken me all over the world and given me some amazing opportunities,” Gerrans said on the Cycling Victoria website.
“It can be a hard sport to get into, though, that’s why I’m supporting the new initiative to get cycling in to schools.
“Seven Saturday events at various safe events around Melbourne – you can represent your school, including criteriums, individual time trials and team time trials where you can race with your mates.”
The first leg of the championships will be held on Saturday 25 October at Casey Fields Critierium, with the prologue individual time trial (ITT) serving as a grading event for riders.
