PARTS of the Warneet Yacht Club were reduced to rubble during last week’s wild weather.
High-speed winds on Wednesday 1 October “blew it to bits” said Commodore of the club Brian Shaw.
“There were boats all over the place, all wrecked and the roof flew off into the car park,” he said.
Most of the damage occurred down from the yacht club near the boat house, and Mr Shaw said a couple of cars were also damaged.
“The wind totally demolished it,” he said.
“There were boats all over the place,” Mr Shaw said adding that club members were upset by the damage, with one boat in particular causing much grief.
“There was quite an old boat people had planned to restore which was also damaged,” he said.
“It was from the early 60s and they were going to hand it in the boat house.”
He said the restoration job on this boat would take a bit more work now.
Around 50 people are members of the Warneet Boat Club, and Mr Shaw said a man from Warneet Boat Club said the roof rose from its hinges.
“Someone saw the roof lift up,” he said.
“The walls also disappeared and part of it went over the fence.”
Mr Shaw said some of the members, whose boats were damaged, didn’t have insurance but said they should be able to have them replaced.
The club member said he “couldn’t believe it” and that it was a “horrendous thing.”
