The world of words

BUDDING young writers, poets or lyricists have been urged to showcase their creative flair and enter the 2014 Fresh Words Young Writers Competition.
The competition, run by the City of Casey, is open to young people aged between seven and 12 years old who live, work or study in the municipality.
There are four categories – creative writing, poetry/lyrics, English as a second language and, in recognition of the Anzac 100 year anniversary, a Honouring the Anzac Centenary category.
City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett encouraged young people submit their entries into the competition.
“Words can shape and influence our world and in the hands of skilled and talented writers, can inspire people in their millions and leave lasting impressions on all those touched by them,” he said.
“Although the way in which we write and the channels in which we access literary works may have changed over the years, the significance of the written word has not.
“I encourage our young people to consider sharing their inner Shakespeare, Alicia Keys or Banjo Paterson in the seventh annual Fresh Words writing competition.
“Great prizes are up for grabs in every age group and category, so why not try your hand at expressing yourself through prose?”
Entries close at 5pm on Friday 19 September.
