Students reach out

By BRIDGET COOK

A GROUP of Lyndhurst Secondary College students reached their goals to raise money and awareness for The Reach Foundation.
The school’s Year-12 VCAL class students were required to complete a project as part of their personal development skills unit in which they had to help out in the community in some way.
Lead by teacher Kelly Bendon and student Rhys Johnston, the class organised Reach Day on Friday 29 August.
Rhys said the event aimed to get the whole school involved and was based around The Reach Foundation.
“We had a guest speaker from Reach come down and talk to the students,” he said.
“We also had a barbecue and ran team building games throughout the day.
“At lunchtime we had a school disco and entry to that required students to purchase one of the school’s anti-bullying wristbands.”
Rhys said the day was a huge success and helped students achieve their goal of raising awareness about Reach as well as about $200 in donations.
“There were lots of kids talking about Reach, which was our main goal,” he said.
“A lot of students might want to get involved with Reach and I think this opened up ideas for them.
“The whole school got behind the day, it was great.
“We have been planning this for a couple of months and it was a great team effort.”
