Eagles hold the line

By DAVID NAGEL

ONLY four teams remain in the Casey Cardinia Netball League after a weekend of a high drama.
Saturday’s qualifying final at Berwick produced a stunning finish, where Beaconsfield’s premiership hopes received a huge boost with a thrilling one-goal victory, 42-41, over Narre Warren.
The Eagles held a narrow margin all day, but couldn’t shake the Magpies, who came hard in the final quarter. It was left to the experience of star mid-courter Jasmine Maddocks to get the Eagles across the line.
Berwick rode a fast start to a four-goal, 39-35, victory over Pakenham in a typically hard fought elimination final at ROC.
The Wickers, with Lynne Moyes and Emily Wilson in good touch, jumped last year’s premiers and maintained their lead through to the final whistle.
“Our start got us over the line … and the girls hunger and want for the end result,” Berwick coach Melissa Ahern said. “We controlled the game from the start.”
Beaconsfield take on the undefeated Doveton in this Saturday’s second semi-final at Pakenham, while Berwick and Narre Warren will look to progress through to the last three in Sunday’s first semi-final at Beaconsfield.
