SOUTH East Water has experienced an increase in blocked sewerage systems in the area, caused by items that shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet.
The water retailer is now urging Casey residents to ‘stop, think, bin’ before flushing differing sanitary products, in particular items being marketed as flushable wipes.
General manager of network services Mark McCormack urged people to watch what they put down the sink and toilet to help prevent blocked pipes, pumps and sewers.
“There is now a wide range of ‘flushable’ baby and sanitary wipes that are marketed to customers as safe to flush down the toilet, but this simply is not the case,” he said.
“Flushing wipes and other items not designed to be treated in sewerage system can cause messy toilet overflows, expensive household plumbing repairs and spills of sewage into the environment or homes.”
Sanitary items, cooking oil, cotton buds, baby and sanitary wipes and nappies are all in the no-flush category.
