Caps off for cafe

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

THERE’S no question Jenny Black has left behind an indelible legacy.
The Narre Warren mother lost her battle with cancer in June but the community has rallied to ensure her memory will live on forever.
This month MadCap Cafe at Westfield Fountain Gate will serve as the location for a special Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) morning tea on Saturday 16 August, facilitated by mental health organisation Ermha.
Ermha CEO Peter Waters said MadCap Cafe, one of Ermha’s social enterprises, would serve as the perfect venue for Saturday’s morning tea.
“MadCap’s been involved with other fundraising activities but this is the first time it’s been focused on breast cancer,” he said.
“Breast cancer is an issue that pervades the entire community.
“Cancer is not one of those things that’s selective about who gets it and who doesn’t.
“To that extent it’s the same as a mental illness, it doesn’t discriminate on the basis of race or culture or age.
“It’s essentially a community issue and when you bring an issue like that and an awareness raising approach to an issue like that, into a mainstream centre like Westfield, then that’s really good for the community.”
Mrs Black had twice survived breast cancer before losing her battle earlier this year.
Her husband Geoff will speak at the MadCap morning tea along with Mr Waters and Liberal candidate and friend of Jenny’s, Amanda Stapledon.
Ms Stapledon approached MadCap to assist in delivering the morning tea, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going towards the BCNA.
“Like many in our community I’ve personally been touched by the devastating consequences of breast cancer,” Ms Stapledon said.
“I am committed to raising funds for support programs and research into a disease that is depriving so many people of their family and friends.
“Breast Cancer Network Australia does such an amazing job and they provide a lot of additional support for people that have breast cancer but also for their families, and after the passing of Jenny Black, it was something that hit me so hard it was just in response to that to try and further that cause.”
MadCap Cafe is on Level 1 at Westfield Fountain Gate Shopping Cente, near Terry White Chemist.
