TOORADIN Primary School prep students enjoyed a feast which was grown and prepared by Grade 5 and 6 students recently.
The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Program participants prepared dishes from a basket of home-grown, freshly-picked produce, supplemented by fresh celery and leeks donated by Lincoln Schreurs and his family.
The menu included potato and leek pizza, a celery and onion dip with crudites, grissini sticks and pineapple muffins.
“The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is a huge asset to our school,” kitchen garden specialist Fiona Berkholz said.
“We grow much of our own produce in the school vegetable garden, planting, weeding and harvesting for ourselves and then we bring it into the kitchen and cook up some quite challenging dishes.
“Our plan is to introduce all of the younger classes to the kitchen.
“They get so excited about coming to cook in Grade 3 so it makes sense to give them an opportunity to enjoy the kitchen environment.”
Ms Berkholz said donations of produce for classes were always welcome.
“And we love our parent helpers both in the kitchen and garden,” she said.
“They are a huge part of the program and help foster a feeling of community involvement.
“It is also good for them to see that our budding master chefs are eating some really fresh, healthy foods that they have prepared themselves.”
