TWO Narre Warren DJs are so close to the international stage, they can taste it.
DJ duo Michael Giakoumakis, 21, and Travis Anderson, 22, have made it to the state final for the YOUR SHOT DJ competition, where a set at the Australian dance festival mecca – Stereosonic – is up for grabs.
On top of that, if they win the Victorian competition the pair will be in the box seat for a DJ set in Mexico or the USA and will also receive a mentoring session from world-renowned DJ Tiesto.
“We’re just a couple of humble Narre boys, and we always have been,” Michael said.
“We like to think of it this way, we have such a support group behind us and they’ve treated us like we’re something.
“We know we’re something.”
The best mates from Narre South – known as the Moustache Mafia when they’re behind the decks – were among 76 contestants in their home state to win through to the next stage of the competition, which includes a six-week DJ training course being run at the moment.
The YOUR SHOT competition is also run concurrently in Sydney and Brisbane, with 7500-8000 people trying out across all three states in the preliminary auditions.
Next month the pair will compete against their fellow successful Victorian DJs to take out the top prize for their state.
“We know everything about music, but as far as using the decks is concerned a lot of it is new to us,” Michael said.
“We picked it up real quick but it’s new.
“The competition has completely changed our world.”
YOUR SHOT was started in 2010 and last year saw crowds saw more than 10,000 people attend the state performances.
Next month’s DJ final will be held at the Royal Melbourne Hotel and will showcase some of the best headline and resident dance acts from Victoria.
“They want the whole package, and they want us to show them what we’ve got,” Michael said.
“It’s more marketability, and we’re told we’re very approachable and likeable guys.
“As far as we’re concerned, we believe ourselves to be top contenders, me and Trav have been contenders our entire lives and we’re going in to the competition with that mindset.”
And what can spectators expect on stage from this potentially destined duo?
“Our showmanship is important, me and Trav have contrasting styles,” Michael said.
“I’m the hyper active one who can’t stop talking; Trav just sits there and deals with me.
“You put me on a stage and I explode, Trav’s the same and you get to see the energy.
“The chemistry just rolls.”
