Drmic in Boomers camp

By JARROD POTTER

ANTHONY Drmic will don the green and gold in training this month as he vies for a place in the Australian Boomers world championships team.
Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis has brought the guard/forward into the 14-man Australian Boomers training camp squad and Drmic, 22, from Endeavour Hills, is keen to get back on court and put behind him a stress fracture that derailed his NCAA season with Boise State.
“I found out about a month ago and have been pretty excited since,” Drmic said.
“I have been recovering from a stress fracture injury to my right foot and am pretty much healed and ready to go.”
“Honestly, I was a little disappointed with my year (at Boise), although my stats individually looked OK, I was plagued with injuries and didn’t perform as well as I wanted to in the second half of the season.”
The training camp is the pre-cursor to the upcoming Aus-Sino Challenge – where the Boomers face China – and Drmic wants to earn his colours and make a mark on the coaching panel to give him another chance at the international level.
“I have yet to play in the series and am pretty excited,” Drmic said.
“Each year, it has become better and got more of a following from people back home.
“I’m just excited to put on the green and gold again after taking a break from it last year.”
Making the world championships would be a dream come true for Drmic, but he knows the challenge ahead will be difficult to make that select squad.
“This is my goal,” Drmic said.
“It will be extremely hard to make the actual team, but if I come into the camps with a positive attitude and perform well, you never know what can happen.”
Drmic confirmed he will finish his basketball collegiate career with Boise State, then look towards the professional ranks.
“I’ll be completing my senior year at Boise State and will then explore my professional options, whether that be the NBA, overseas, or even back home in Australia,” Drmic said.
Drmic was thrilled to trial for the upcoming Aus-Sino Challenge, which starts on 29 May at Challenge Stadium, Perth.
