THROWING a boomerang does take skill.
Last week, 112 Japanese students visiting Beaconhills College were excited to try boomerang-throwing and learn a little about aboriginal culture, courtesy of head elder of the Wurundjeri people, Murrundindi.
There were certainly some interesting attempts with a few boomerangs going off in wild directions and plenty of laughs among the students.
The year-nine students and 18 staff from Yokohama’s Yamate Gakuin Junior High school are the biggest group to visit the school.
They stayed with college host families during their five-day visit to Pakenham.
Along with the cultural presentation, the students took part in sport, hip hop dancing, cooking and art classes, they also enjoyed an Aussie meat pie lunch.
Yamate Gakuin’s vice-principal Ichiro Osawa said the students had just finished their final exams in Japan and were “so excited” to be part of the annual program, which began in 2002.
“This is a real experience for them,” Mr Osawa said.
