On the road to conquer cancer

By BRIDGET SCOTT

ELIZABETH Cullen is among those in the community who have been confronted with cancer but this 25-year-old won’t let this stand in her way of fighting for a cure.
Although they live in separate states, the Pakenham resident has still felt the full effect of having two parents with the disease and hopes by taking part in the Peter Mac Ride to Conquer Cancer she will help find a cure.
Although she has never participated in the ride before, she has taken part in other brave initiatives, such as Shave for a Cure last year.
Made aware of the ride by her boss, Ms Cullen said it immediately appealed to her.
“My boss actually told me about it,” she said.
“I was not aware of it and it excited me.”
Elizabeth is hopeful that by taking part in the ride and holding a fundraiser, she will help prevent other families from being faced with cancer.
“I hope I can raise money for cancer that stops other families going through what we have been through,” she said.
“Even if I raise $100, they are closer.”
Elizabeth said the world will be a better place if other people don’t have to experience what her own family going through and is asking for the support of her local community to help with fundraising.
On Saturday 19 October, Elizabeth will host a trivia and fundraising eventing at the Bunyip Hall.
She said her aim is to book out as many tables as she can to help reach her goal, and minimum funds of $2500.
She said she has had an “influx” of donations from local businesses and is looking forward to a successful night.
She said she has found part of the fundraising to be hard, but is happy with the support she has so far received, including that from her parents in Sydney.
“They think it’s a great thing to do,” she said.
“At the end of the day they know why we are doing it.”
