Silver lining in lost locks

By DANIELLE GALVIN

WHEN Kate McCrory cuts her hair off in the next couple of weeks, it will make life easier with a 17-month-old running around.
But the motive behind cutting her hair off is twofold – so that she can help her family friend raise money for his Ride to Conquer Cancer challenge and donate her locks to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign.
The Pakenham mum will have her hair cut off in a bid to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Centre and contribute to her friend David Dortmans’ fund-raising efforts.
“I have a family friend that I have known for quite some years who is doing the 200-kilometre Ride to Conquer Cancer,” she said.
“He has to raise $2500, and I thought I have long hair, let’s cut it off.
“It will be a massive change and easier with a 17-month-old son.”
But the reason David is doing the ride is even more special. In July, his niece Bethany lost her battle with cancer. She had been fighting Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for 18 months.
“It’s a pretty personal event for me and my family,” David said.
“My family were involved last year.
“The ride is one of the major fund-raisers for the Peter Mac Cancer Centre which is where Bethany went.”
It will be a particularly emotional and meaningful ride for David, who said it would mean the world to his brother, nieces and nephews.
“Along her journey Bethany was courageous and an inspiration – she was incredible.”
On Saturday 5 October, David is running a trivia night at the Max Pawsey Reserve in Fountain Drive Narre Warren. Tickets are $10 per person, games start at 7.30pm. Email David for tickets dadorty63@gmail.com
