Young and old battle through

By RUSSELL BENNETT

THE rising stars of Pakenham Little Athletics have completed another successful cross country season.
The Sykes family, once again, allowed the club to use its property for its Saturday morning meets.
The course presented a strong challenge to all the athletes, both young and old, with very little flat ground and some testing hill climbs to slow down even the quickest of the group.
During the season many personal bests and new course records were set.
Bruce Lewis from the Pakenham Little Athletics Club said: “One of the enjoyable things with our cross country season is the ability of the parents and care givers being able to compete as well as the children.
“This certainly sets up some interesting battles between young and old.
“During the season, participants travelled to a host of club open days in addition to regional and state cross country championships.”
Pakenham Little Athletics had five competitors line up this year at the State Championships held at Warragul’s Lardner Park.
“A big thank you to all those families who supported and turned up every Saturday to make a very enjoyable season, we look forward to seeing you all again next year,” Bruce said.
“We are now looking forward to the warmer months and the oncoming athletics season.”
Pakenham Little Athletics will kick off its new season on Saturday 5 October at 8.30am.
Those thinking of getting involved in athletics for the first time should head along to the club’s Come and Try Day on 14 September from 10am.
“With football season finished, it’s a great opportunity to get some friends together and come and have some fun,” Bruce said.
“Who knows, you may be the next Usain Bolt or Sally Pearson.
“It’s a great feeling to run or throw a personal best, and it’s this satisfaction that keeps our members coming back year after year.”
Young people aged between six and 15 are invited to join in the family-friendly atmosphere.
Pakenham Little Athletics is currently located at Toomuc Reserve, behind Cardinia Life, just off the Princes Highway in Pakenham.
