A LOCAL charity which fundraises for cancer was recently announced as the charity partner for the MRA Cranbourne GP run.
Cancer Research Advocate Bikers, more commonly known as C.R.A.B, is a motorcycle social club which has centres all across Australia.
Earlier this month, the club was announced as the charity partner for the annual GP run, much to the delight of Victorian President Steve Bell.
“It meant quite a bit,” he said.
“It’s great exposure for our club, as we raise money for cancer research, so the exposure will be great.”
While C.R.A.B has been in existence since 2004, the Victorian organisation was only established around 12 months ago.
The charitable organisation was first started by Rob Grimstone in 2004 to honour his mother who died of cancer in the late 90’s.
The Victorian membership base currently sits at 35, but Mr Bell said the club is always looking for more people to get on board.
City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said it was great to have such a worthwhile cause on board for the Cranbourne event.
“With more than 120,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed in Australia every year, we know that this disease impacts the lives of so many people in our community,” she said.
“This makes the Cancer Research Advocate Bikers (C.R.A.B.) a fitting charity for this year’s event.” She also said that C.R.A.B’s involvement in the event will give the organisation the chance to showcase to the community the positive work they do.
“Having a presence at the 2013 MRA Cranbourne GP Run will help raise the profile of this innovative group and remind the community of just how close-to-home this illness is,” she said.
Chairperson of the MRA Cranbourne GP Run Advisory Committee Cr Wayne Smith said he was also delighted to have C.R.A.B on board.
“I am delighted to have C.R.A.B on board and encourage everyone to throw their support behind this important cause.”
