Adults take path to learning

COMMUNITY centres in Pakenham and across Cardinia Shire will host a range of classes and workshops from 1 to 8 September to celebrate Adult Learners’ Week 2013.
The theme of this year’s Adult Learners’ Week is ‘pathways’, with hundreds of activities being held across Australia.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen encouraged residents to check out the courses and training opportunities on offer at their nearest neighbourhood house, community centre or U3A.
“Picking up a new skill can really take you places, no matter what stage of life you’re at,” he said.
“You never know – it might even lead to an exciting new career, or simply teach you a new ability that will enhance your life or make it easier.”
Living Learning Pakenham is hosting an information stall all day on Wednesday 4 September and Thursday 5 September at the Pakenham Marketplace and will be offering details on upcoming courses and activities.
At the Outlook Community Centre, there will be a session on Wednesday 4 September, 2.30pm-4pm about searching the internet as well as learning how to navigate the internet and effectively search for information.
Bookings are essential, contact 5940 4728 or communitycentre@outlookvic.org.au to book.
There are also sessions at Bunyip Community House, Emerald Community House and the Lang Lang Community Centre.
All are not-for-profit organisations which are managed by volunteers through a committee of management.
“These centres play an important role in keeping people socially connected. They are particularly helpful to residents who might otherwise find themselves feeling lonely and isolated,” Cr Owen said.
“I encourage residents to drop into their nearest community house or neighbourhood centre to meet other community members and see what is on offer.
“It could be the start of a very rewarding journey!”
For further information about what’s on at local community houses or neighbourhood centres, contact the centre directly.
Contact details are available in the ‘Community Directory’ on the council’s website www.cardinia.vic.gov.au.
