Council in class

By BRIDGET SCOTT

STUDENTS at Hampton Park Primary School got a shock when a familiar face became their principal for a day last Wednesday.
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith visited the school last week where he took on the task of being principal for a day.
Cr Smith visited classrooms, attended school concert rehearsals and wandered the playgrounds at lunch breaks doing yard duty.
Although this was a change in scene for the primary school students, Cr Smith is no stranger to the teaching scene, leading the Education Unit at Monash Medical Centre.
Cr Smith spent time with the schools leaders and gave a presentation on the issues facing the rapidly growing City of Casey and what this will mean for young people in the area.
Principal at the school Leonie King said all of the pupils were inspired by what Cr Smith had to say.
“Students were inspired by councillor Smith’s challenge to make a difference to the lives of all students at Hampton Park pimary by leaving a legacy behind when they graduate to secondary college,” Ms King said.
Ms King said her own discussions with Cr Smith helped her to develop an understanding of the issues faced by some school students and also said the Principal for Day program was very valuable.
“It allows those participating to develop a new perspective on leadership by sharing ideas and experiences,” she said.
