It’s a healthy sign

CARDINIA Shire schools are being encouraged to jump, skip and run to a healthier classroom.
Health Minister David Davis said it was quick and simple for schools to get involved in the Victorian Government’s Healthy Together Achievement Program.
“It assists schools to make plans to support children’s healthy development by incorporating health and well-being into teaching, developing a healthy culture and environment, and forging links with local health services,” Mr Davis said.
“This could range from encouraging active transport, healthy fundraising or ensuring better protection from the sun. And finally, it recognises the achievements of schools who are leading the way in improving health and well-being in their community.”
Gembrook MP Brad Battin said Cardinia Shire was one of 14 local government areas across Victoria that would be working with their community to create healthier environments under Healthy Together Victoria.
“It is great to see in Cardinia Shire 16 primary schools and 26 early childhood services have already registered to create healthier environments and I encourage others to follow their lead,” Mr Battin said.
Bass MP Ken Smith said the program was a great initiative for recognising and promoting good practice for improving children’s environments.
“I encourage all schools and early childhood services to register with the Achievement Program and I look forward to seeing some of the improvements made to children’s environments for ensuring healthy outcomes,” Mr Smith said.
Mr Davis said the government was committed to working with the community in tackling preventable diseases, obesity and chronic illness and promoting healthier lifestyles.
“The Achievement Program is part of the government’s Healthy Together Victoria – a state-wide preventive health effort that encourages all Victorians to put good health at the centre of their everyday lives, funded jointly with the Commonwealth through the National Partnership Agreement on Preventive Health,” Mr Davis said.
Schools can sign up on the new Healthy Together Achievement Program website at www.achievementprogram.healthytogether.vic.gov.au
