Super streak for state greats

By JARROD POTTER

HALLAM Senior College’s girls football program continued its streak as the best in the state, claiming the Herald Sun Shield with victory in Ballarat on Friday.
Hallam’s first match was a 3.6 (24) to 1.3 (9) win over Sacred Heart College, Geelong, before moving on to face Ballarat Clarendon College in the Division 1 grand final.
In average conditions, beset by the torrential rain that hit the state last week, Hallam endeavoured as it kicked with the wind and snared a goal and keep Ballarat scoreless.
The conditions kept the scores low as both sides went goalless in the second term before Hallam knocked in two more goals and held off a late charge from Ballarat to claim the Shield.
“To win on Friday was a magnificent achievement considering it was the first time that the girls played together due to our SSV games being forfeits up to this date,” Hallam coach Brett Alexander said.
“They really played as a team with the focus for the day to be defensive pressure and they delivered.
“In the first game we had 44 one per cent efforts but in the final they had 43 one per cent efforts by half time
“It was a super effort to get back to back titles.”
Karly Tapner was named best on ground in the final, while Brittany Wood (received the medal for BOG in the qualifying game), Ebony Hobson, Lauren Hutchinson, Rachael Hunt, Cassandra Meads and Lauren Hojnacki all excelled in the woeful conditions.
The girls play this Thursday 25 July in SSV South Zone Final against Mornington from 12.30pm at Hallam Recreation Reserve.
