Don’t be a dunce in speed zones

By LIA SPENCER

STUDENTS have returned to class prompting police to issue a warning to both drivers and pedestrians.
Senior Sergeant John Felton from the Casey Highway Patrol said police would be monitoring areas around schools in Casey during this school term.
He urged drivers to be vigilant and obey the school speed zones.
“As is always the case we don’t want to see road trauma around schools, nor anywhere for that fact,” Sen Sgt Felton said.
“Given we have just had a couple of weeks of school holidays, drivers need to be aware that speed restrictions around schools now apply on school days.”
Sen Sgt Felton said parents also have to be cautious when dropping off their children at school and, if walking, use the school crossings.
“Parents need to ensure their children are restrained and they park safely and in accordance with any parking restriction signs when picking up or dropping children off at school.
“Speed restriction and parking signs exist to provide the safest possible environment around our schools,” he said.
“Children learn from observation, watching others, especially adults, so if you walk children to school, please demonstrate safety to them by using school crossings, looking left and right and not running across the road.”
Sen Sgt Felton said it was important to talk to kids about road safety.
He said if students use iPods during their walk to school, they should consider listening to it in one ear only so they can hear what is happening around them.
