CLIMATE change may be a global challenge, but locals can make a difference. That is the message left for attendees of last week’s Casey Cardinia business breakfast by Professor Tim Flannery, one of Australia’s most respected environmentalists and a world renowned expert on climate change.
The breakfast at Cardinia Cultural Centre was held on Wednesday 19 June and was attended by more than 200 people. Prof Flannery, who used to live in Cockatoo, highlighted some effects of climate change which would have an impact on the Casey and Cardinia regions.
Bushfires will be ’more frequent and more devastating’ and coastal areas will see sea levels rise and more coastal flooding. But “what we see in the real world gives true optimism,” he said.
Prof Flannery highlighted global initiatives to reduce greenhouse gasses such as increasing use of solar and wind energy.
“Solar and wind are new big energy assets,” he said.
“There is a fundamental shift in what is happening globally. In 20 to 30 years, we will see a dramatically different world, but whether that is for better or worse, who can say.”
On a local level, Prof Flannery said everyone had a capacity to make a difference such as looking at alternate energy sources like solar or getting involved with local climate change organisations.
“Speak to your local member of parliament and find out what their position is,” he said.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen said the Casey-Cardinia business breakfasts were seen by local business operators as a great way to regularly catch up with friends in business, make new contacts and keep up to date with fresh and important ideas relating to the business world.
“Many people from our region’s business community never miss a business breakfast,” Cr Owen said.
“They are regarded as being very informative and enjoyable, which is reflected in their consistently strong attendance.”
The Casey-Cardinia business breakfast series is hosted by Cardinia Shire Council, the City of Casey, Monash University and the Melbourne Football Club.
