Developer dubbed “greedy”

By DANIELLE GALVIN

A DEVELOPER’S plans for three units on a Henty Street site have been labelled “greedy” by Cardinia Shire Councillors.
At Monday night’s town planning meeting, councillors rejected an application for a two-storey three-bedroom house and two units at the Pakenham site. Cr George Blenkhorn moved the motion in support of the officer’s recommendation that the proposal would be an “over-development” of a busy street.
“These dwellings would occupy 48 per cent of the site,” he said.
“One of the dwellings is double storey, and on a square block this would look quite obtrusive and stand out quite horribly.
“The second and third dwellings have single car garages and if there are other cars parked there, the people in these units will have to reverse 40 metres out onto the driveway and onto the road – that’s just not on.”
Cr Blenkhorn said Henty Street was too busy for such a development.
“That is why I am endorsing the officer’s recommendation and refusing this application,” he said.
Cr Kate Lempriere said it was ridiculous that the tenants have to reverse out of their car parks.
“I think the developers sometimes get greedy – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,” she said.
“I want to have developers build here, and of course I’m all about jobs, jobs, jobs, but for God sake think about what you’re doing.”
Officers recommended that the development be refused on the basis that it did not suit the neighbourhood character.
Cr Jodie Owen supported the motion and said the street was already massively over-crowded and that if councillors allowed the development, it would cause more trouble for the residents in the street.
Cr Collin Ross echoed the concerns of his fellow councillors and said the development was out of line with the amenity of the area.
He said he would vote against the application because it might set a precedent for other developers.
