Cavaliers turn pink crusaders

By JARROD POTTER

A NOBLE cause gained the support of the City of Casey’s premier basketball club this week with the Casey Cavaliers going pink on Sunday to support the Breast Cancer Network Australia.
The idea snowballed after Cavaliers senior mens’ players Stephen Michalski and Dylan Wayman thought to get the whole club involved to raise money for charity.
“One day me and Steve were chatting, and we had a big Mother’s Day clash against Keilor, so let’s do something for breast cancer awareness to give back something to our mums,” Wayman said.
“The women’s team heard about it and wanted to join us, so we went through the committee and it got the go-ahead.
The club is hosting a double-header, mens and womens matches on Sunday afternoon from noon, with a cupcake sale, half time shoot out for mums, best dressed awards for individuals, sponsors and junior teams and most importantly – the club wants the Cranbourne Basketball Stadium decked out ceiling to floor in as much pink as possible.
All the players will wear something pink on court to support the cause, with the hope of getting pink uniforms next year to help raise even more awareness and funds for BCNA.
“Hume City has a whole pink uniform for that reason, and if we could get for next year a whole pink uniform and to make it an annual event on the Mother’s Day clashes – it would be great just to help out and raise awareness,” Wayman said.
Cavaliers women’s team captain Lara Pauline said with such a large number of people in the Cavaliers’ community affected, it was important to wear pink and help out.
“Cause that’s affected a few of our team members personally and it’s great that everyone has got on board,” Pauline said.
We’re asking everyone to wear a lot of pink and bring lots of change.”
More information can be found off the Casey Cavaliers Cheer Squad Facebook page or by searching for “Ballin for Breast Cancer” on Facebook. The women’s match starts at noon and the men tip off at 2pm.
