Call goes out to ring triple zero

PAKENHAM police are reminding residents to ring triple zero in an emergency rather than their closest station.
Senior Sergeants Trevor Vondrasek and Terry Rowlands said people should not call the station in their town when police are urgently needed.
Sen Sgt Vondrasek said some residents still called the station in times of need.
He said the call is recorded when people ring triple zero and it is easier for the emergency services to co-ordinate their efforts.
“When you ring triple zero, the operator is able to pass on any job which requires attention to the nearest available unit straight away,” he said.
Sen Sgt Vondrasek said officers at police stations often had to pass information about the emergency through to triple zero anyway.
He also said the triple zero operator could stay on the phone to the caller and liaise with police attending the incident.
“It depends on where the divisional van is located, too,” he said.
