Car thieves in their sights

A NEW crime fighting unit at Pakenham police station will target thefts from cars in town.
Police have reported an increase in thefts of items from cars, including iPods, wallets and other personal items.
Sergeant Darren Shaw is tasked with leading the team and said there were a number of different things police would be targeting, including drug-related offences.
He encouraged Pakenham residents to lock their cars at all times, even when the car was parked in a driveway or out of sight, and for drivers to take personal belongings inside the house.
Sgt Shaw encouraged anyone whose car had been broken into, had items stolen from their car or windows broken, to contact police.
“It doesn’t matter how big or small,” he said.
“Always report it.”
Senior Sergeant Trevor Vondrasek said police wanted the public to be aware of the thefts from cars.
“If there is anything of value in your car – take it out and remember to lock your car even if it is parked behind a gate or in the driveway,” he said.
Sen Sgt Vondrasek suggested residents park their cars in their garage where possible or in well-lit areas.
“We have had a spate of these incidents – and it is quite prevalent,” he said.
Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Pakenham police on 5945 2500.
