A PREGNANT blue tongue lizard caused a bit of panic in recent weeks when she gave birth to her 11 babies at the Racecourse Road Veterinary Clinic in Pakenham.
The 11 active blue tongues must have been loving life in the vet’s clinic, free to roam around and discover the world until Monday morning when staff arrived to find them running amok.
Nine baby lizards were found in all of the nooks and crannies at the clinic.
Practice manager Stephanie Haak said the mother lizard was found in Pakenham and brought into the clinic with a wound on Saturday 2 February.
“She required an anaesthetic and the wound was stitched up, she recovered well,” Ms Haak said.
“On Monday morning we came into the clinic and found two baby blue tongues in the waiting room, the mother had given birth over the weekend.
“She was in a cage in the cat room but since the babies are so small they could escape through the bars of the cage.”
“Since blue tongues can have up to 20 babies we started looking for the rest, we were finding them under cages, behind doors and in corners of the clinic,” Ms Haak said.
“Over the day we found nine babies throughout the clinic.
“In the next couple of days we found another one in the dog cage room, and a client found one in the waiting room by the scales – in total we found 11.”
“The babies come out ready to go, within a few days they disperse and go out into the world on their own,” Ms Haak said.
“They all did very well and have since been released.”
