Big C means citizen award

LOCAL legend Jeni Mathieson from the 4Cs was named as the Citizen of the Year at Cardinia Shire’s Australia Day ceremony last week.
There were 28 nominations for this year’s awards which were judged by the Cardinia Australia Day Advisory Committee.
“I am feeling very humbled and I’d like to thank those who nominated me,” Ms Mathieson said.
“I am very fortunate that I get to go to work and live out my passion every day.
“We have a fantastic community and I believe if we all work together we can have the greatest shire in Victoria.”
Mayor Brett Owen praised the recipients for their contribution to the community and said they deserved the accolades.
“Congratulations and thank you to all nominees and winners,” he said.
“Your active involvement in our community is much appreciated and we celebrate you and the spirit in which your hard work is given.”
Fifty-eight residents from across the globe took the Oath of Allegiance at the ceremony.
They come from all over including Canada, Ethiopia, India, Iraq, Ireland, Mauritius, Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, USA and Zimbabwe.
Former councillor, Rotarian and PB Ronald Trust trustree Charles Huyskens was named the Senior Citizen of the Year and thanked his wife for her unconditional support over the years.
Emerald Community House (ECH) shared the Community Organisation of the Year with Living Learning Pakenham.
Neighbourhood House Manager from Living Learning Amy McIntyre-Rogers said it was a “great victory” and that the centre was providing a range of opportunities as the community grows.
Cr Owen said Community Service Award winner Justin Matthys devoted his life to the service of others and sets a shining example for those around him.
