Barbies fire up for our big day

PAKENHAM will once again be the centre of Australia Day celebrations this year.
Cardinia Shire Council is supporting community celebrations across the shire, with the Australia Day ambassadors recently announced and events in Kooweerup, Lang Lang and Cockatoo.
The Cardinia Cultural Centre at Lakeside Boulevard in Pakenham will be the primary venue for celebrations, including the Australia Day awards, citizenship ceremony, sausage sizzle and free community activities. The Australia Day Ambassador for Pakenham is Wesa Chau, community advocate and founder of the Australian Federation of International Students.
Kooweerup residents have arranged an egg and bacon breakfast along with a flag-raising, readings by a local poet and a presentation of awards to local people who have made difference in the community. Channel 9 personality and GTV Foundation chairman Pete Smith is their Australia Day Ambassador.
A bacon and egg breakfast will also be served at Lang Lang Memorial Hall before Lang Lang Cubs and Scouts hoist the flag and Lang Lang Community Singers perform. Radio and TV personality John Blackman will be speaking as their Australia Day Ambassador.
Cockatoo locals have organised an Aussie breakfast of sausages, pancakes and fruit platters. The flag will be raised, a celebratory cake will be cut and cricketing skills will be on display at the ‘Cockatoo Cup’.
Visit the council’s website for more specific event details or contact the council on 1300 787 624.
