AN EXTENSION of a widely used community facility in Berwick was opened on the weekend.
The Berwick Springs Pavilion extension includes a new community room, which could be used for a range of activities such as training and information sessions, to dance and fitness.
City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz, South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Inga Peulich, Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley and local residents celebrated the official opening of the extension on Sunday.
Nearly a million dollars has been invested in extending the Berwick Springs Park Pavilion, with City of Casey as the main source of funds.
Ms Graley said she was very pleased that Casey Council listened to the concerns of club members and moved to provide the extension.
“The Berwick Spring Sports Club has been in desperate need of additional change room space for a long time,” Ms Graley said.
“There has been a shortage of community meeting space in the local area, so the Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House and Berwick Springs Residents and Owners Association will be making good use of the new community room.
“We now have a community asset at Berwick Springs Park that we can all be proud of.”
Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan said the Berwick Springs Pavilion extension would become a benchmark for the management of shared facilities in Victoria’s growth area communities.
“What makes this facility different is the unique governance partnership arrangements between the resident Berwick Springs Sports Club and the Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House,” Mr Ryan said.
“It also offers great potential to build on the partnership with Berwick Springs Sports Club, to increase sport and recreation opportunities for all, including people with a disability.
“When people have places like this in which to gather, we know that it helps their communities become stronger, more connected, inclusive and better places to live.”
