Teams tumble from top four

POOR performances on Saturday by the Cranbourne Bowling Club’s first and second sides resulted in both teams tumbling out the top four of the Metro pennant ladder. The sides must now win the two remaining games of the season for a chance of playing in the finals.
The top side played away at Berwick and with both sides in the top four on the ladder it was a “must win” game for either side. The hot, steamy conditions added to the intensity of the game and the lead changed several times before the Cranbourne side went to the break six shots down. Unfortunately the boys were unable to rally after tea and eventually went down on all rinks. The loss caused the side to fall from fourth to sixth spot on the Division One ladder.
The second side played at home against the ladder leader Berwick (2). Rob Reid’s rink of Mel Cassano, Fritz Helle and Alan Mickle achieved a rare “8” shots maximum score on the second end of their game and are now eligible for the much sought after “8 badge”. Regrettably this was the only highlight of the game for Cranbourne who were out-bowled by their opponents. Only Joe Byrne’s rink of Ken Fulton, Steve Bentley and Brian Caddell had a win, giving the side two valuable points in the lead up to finals.
The third side travelled to Cheltenham and managed to knock off the ladder leaders on their home turf. The green was very tricky and two-paced, making it hard for bowlers to find a consistent line and length. Gary Hunt’s team of Vic Butera, Tony Collins and Peter DeLisle were the big winners with a 16-shot win. The win leaves the side only three points outside the four, in fifth spot behind Narre Warren.
An exciting win at home by the Cranbourne fourth side brought smiles to the spectators in an otherwise bleak day for the club. The rinks of Lindsay Coate and Des Conroy had good wins and Steve Boyd’s rink eked out a draw on the last end of play.
The Cranbourne fifth and sixth sides were defeated by Glen Waverley and Pakenham respectively.

Cranbourne Division One Ladies had an excellent win over Noble Park at home on Tuesday by 22 shots. Two rinks were up on the day with Lyn Whalley’s rink up by 12 shots and Barb Gribbins rink of Thelma Lennon, Bernice Helle and Lesley, winning by 14 shots. The team remains in third place on the ladder.
Cranbourne Division Two Ladies had a bye this week but are settled nicely on top of the ladder and likely to remain there. The Division Three side was overwhelmed by an improved Hampton Park side losing by 44 shots overall. The only winning rink was Vhonda Bonney’s rink up by seven shots. The team maintain their position in third place on the ladder.
The Division Five side had a very close and well fought out match against Glen Eira /McKinnon winning by only one shot. The winning rink was that of Maggie Gibson who finished the day four shots up. This side is now on top of the ladder.
The Saturday Division 10 side went down to Dandenong RSL/Rec by six with Yvonne Van Der Wees’ winning rink up by six shots but it wasn’t enough to cover the other rink.
