FAMILY life took Steve Voursoukis away from soccer for a season, but two-in-a-row away from the round ball wasn’t on the cards for the newly appointed senior coach of the Endeavour United Soccer Club.
Voursoukis, who playedfor 14 seasons with South Springvale before becoming theircoach, is on a mission to raise Endeavour United back into the State Leagues, with the side playing this season in Football Federation Victoria’s Provisional 2 South East League.
Voursoukis said the chance to coach Endeavour United was impossible to resist and a phone call before Christmas brought him into the fold.
“What got me down here was a phone call before Christmas,” Voursoukis said. “I was actually not coaching or planning to do anything for this year, but this opportunity came along and it presented itself with some really exciting challenges.
“I couldn’t refuse the opportunity, the team has a good list and there’s quite a bit to work with down here and that’s what got me over the line.
“My third kid came along and family commitments became more important and I wasn’t too fussed whether I’d coach or not.
“But when you’ve got nothing to do and you get that itch when the opportunity came along I had to take it.”
The standard he wants Endeavour United to attain is ambitious, but Voursoukis believes the team can make the top four this season and push for promotion in pursuit of a championship.
“There are some good names here and potentially some very good players here to put a very good team together so we’re pretty excited about that,” Voursoukis said.
“Any coach aims to win the championship.
“We set ourselves the target to be in the top four and fighting it out for the championship and hopefully with a bit of luck it goes our way.”
Endeavour United is holding their registration day thisSunday at Reema Reserve from 11am to 3pm. Players of any age, boys and girls, are encouraged to come along and register to play this season.
