THERE were many local winners and losers on Melbourne Cup Day but possibly none luckier than the Berwick man who found out he won the lottery from a ticket purchased in Hallam.
The man, who is remaining anonymous, bought a 12 game QuickPick entry from Hallam Square News and Lotto and won a division one prize worth $841,624.21 in Saturday’s TattsLotto draw.
The man said he had had a tough year professionally and personally and couldn’t believe his luck had changed in such a big way.
“I’m not sure what to do or what to think – to be honest I feel quite stunned,” the man said after finding out he’d won.
“I was thinking of going out for a meal tonight but decided against it as I couldn’t really afford it.
“I’ll definitely go out now – I have a reason to celebrate!”
The man, who has been playing TattsLotto every Saturday for 30 years, was not aware of the win until Tatts called to tell him the amazing news.
He said he planned to set himself up financially and possibly buy some property.
“It’s like a big weight has been lifted from my shoulders,” he said.
“Now I have options I didn’t have before.”
The staff at Hallam Square News and Lotto also have reason to celebrate, as it was the shop’s fourth first division ticket in eight years.
Manager Norbie Garduce said it “felt pretty good” to sell the first division ticket and said he believed the Hallam shop’s luck wouldn’t run out any time soon.
There were five division one winners nationally in TattsLotto draw 3159.
In addition to the Victorian winner there were three winners in Queensland and one in New South Wales. The winning numbers were 12, 33, 11, 15, 20 and 32 with the supplementary numbers 19 and 14.
