Shepherds sail in for seas

CARDINIA Shire Council hosted its second Environment and Sustainability Expo last week at the Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham.
With more than 80 exhibitors, the expo’s aim was to inform residents about how to live in a sustainable environment by providing workshops on how to compost, how people can grow their own vegetables, the best ways to recycle waste products, water conservation and energy.
The Pakenham Rotary Farmers’ Market provided free face painting and a jumping castle for the kids, as well as showcasing fruit trees and fresh local schools.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) – an international non-profit group that focuses on marine wildlife conservation – was part of the sustainability expo and made a visit to Lakeside’s Lutheran College last Friday.
Established in 1977, the SSCS uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations. Kathy Burgstahler Chairperson, Lakeside Community Development Forum, said Sea Shepherd gave her inspiration to volunteer for the community, the environment and animals.
“Four years ago I saw a documentary on Captain Paul Watson, their founder, and was inspired to do something myself.
“I like their positive attitude to everything, their passion, and their totally selfless giving of time to what they believe in,” she said.
“They have since participated in a truly inspiring TV documentary series called Whale Wars and it is always refreshing to see children knowing exactly who they are even if their parents may not be so familiar with them, because it raises hope for the future.”
