NEW school captains Ashleigh, Slewa, Tania and Hibah at James Cook Primary School welcomed star 22-year-old basketball player Abby Bishop as their guest speaker at their assembly on Monday.
School teacher Filomena Garner said Abby, who was 16 when she started, spoke at the assembly about leadership and setting goals.
“Abby is a professional basketball player who played for the Seattle Storms in the United States who now plays for the Dandenong Rangers,” Ms Garner said.
“She gave them some advice about striving to reach goals and doing the things that you have to do in order to get there like in her case, leaving her family and how to overcome some obstacles and get the best out of everything.”
This was particularly relevant to the school captains, who are now considered leaders and role models in the school.
“They were really excited about being elected,” Ms Garner said.
“They knew it was a big responsibility because they’re role models for the school and they are given more responsibilities like presenting the whole assembly.”
