Register to safety

By Delima Shanti
IN A display of unity, the Cardinia U3A has teamed up with the Pakenham police, CFA and the Cardinia Shire Council to set up the Cardinia Community Safety Register to give local residents and their friends relative peace of mind.
Senior citizens and people living alone or living with a disability residing in the Cardinia Shire can sign up to the register, where they will be issued with an identity card and fridge magnet containing important information which would save valuable time in cases of emergency. There are no age limits for the register.
Ron Topp, president of the U3A, explained that the local CFA, police and U3A members all contribute in helping members at the community level and volunteers have been assisting those who feel isolated by making calls on a regular basis.
“At the moment we have three volunteers, but we are always happy to accept more volunteers to help us,” Ron said.
“Members can elect times for when they want our volunteers to call them and have a chat. Generally, we can do it weekly or monthly.”
Already 380 members have joined the register and the U3A urges more people to join the safety register for free by completing an application form and returning it to the Pakenham police station. Any information supplied will remain confidential.
