Vulnerable kids get a little help from friends

SOME of Casey’s most vulnerable children are getting by with a little help from their friends.
And while their friends may be a little older – they are providing just as much fun and even more support through the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Casey program.
The recent match of the 30th partnership between a young person and their adult friend has highlighted the success of the initiative.
And that match and more will be on show for all to see when BBBS hold a photo exhibition at Casey ARC from today until Sunday, 5 August.
The Journey of Friendship will feature photographs of current matches and some of the friendships that have been formed between the young people and their adult volunteer.
Volunteer Tina Biro said the program has enabled her to find an “amazing friend” in Alysha, 10.
“In becoming a Big Sister I have had the chance to participate in a fantastic program,” she said.
“Our friendship has blossomed from day one and I anticipate that our bond will only continue to grow stronger over time.”
The first match in Casey’s BBBS program was in December 2006.
Program director Rebecca Wolstenholme said BBBS Casey was in need of financial support to secure its long-term future.
She said the program was initially established through a two-year grant given by the Helen McPherson Smith Trust Fund.
“BBBS is currently seeking community partnerships and sponsors who would like to support this worthwhile program and share in its growth and development within the community and surrounding areas,” Ms Wolstenholme said.
Anyone interested in financially supporting BBBS or getting involved as a volunteer mentor can contact the Casey BBBS Office on 9705 5033. All donations to BBBS are tax deductible.
The exhibit of photos will be on display in the Casey ARC foyer until this Sunday.
