The faithful get together

LEADERS of a range of religious faiths within Casey attended the official launch of the Casey Multifaith Network at Council Chambers recently.
Casey mayor Colin Butler congratulated all the participants on their involvement in the network.
“Council recognises that faith communities working together with all levels of government play an important role in our society, and assist in connecting people and building cohesive communities,” Cr Butler said.
He said with Casey being such a vibrant and multicultural community the role of faith leaders should not be underestimated.
The 2006 census revealed Christianity was the most popular religion with 59 per cent of the Casey population identifying themselves as Christians, although this figure has declined from 64 per cent four years ago.
While overall Christianity declined, there was an increase in followers of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. The Islamic and Buddhist faiths also grew.
“The development of the Casey Multifaith Network is a response to the variety of religions and cultures that make up our community, and was strongly supported amongst faith leaders when the idea was explored in a council survey conducted last year.
“A range of discussions, debate and information sharing since then has resulted in the establishment of the Network. Ultimately, working together can bring rich and mutual benefits to the local and wider community,” he said.
Cr Butler said the Parliament of the World’s Religions is being hosted in Melbourne in 2009 and council is pleased that Casey Multifaith Network could represent Casey at such a significant event.
“The Casey Multifaith Network is dedicated towards promoting peace, harmony and understanding of difference in the City of Casey and is sure to be an inspiration to many.”
