THE third annual Casey Cardinia Relay For Life has been deemed an outstanding success, with a record $42,000 raised for the Cancer Council Victoria.
The 24-hour relay event got underway at Akoonah Park in Berwick at 5.45pm last Friday with cancer survivor and multi-marathon record-holder Stan Miskin speaking at the opening ceremony.
A group of cancer survivors and carers were app-lauded as they completed the first two laps of the event.
During the 24 hours, 413 participants took to the track, with teams camping out overnight, participating in challenges and keeping the spirit alive.
Walkers and runners were rewarded with massages, food and entertainment – all donated by local businesses.
Awards were presented in various categories by event patron Michael Grayling – a cancer survivor for 25 years.
The Mount Eliza Rotary Club, captained by David Rew, raised $7310 and was named the best team fund-raisers.
Pakenham-based group the Mauve Movers, captained by Rhonda Luxford, raised the second highest amount, $6677.
Rhonda also raised the most individual amount, $3834.78.
The Early Birds from Narre Warren, captained by Gwen and Ian McKinnon, came third after raising $4649.
Jenny Williamson and Michael Robertson, from The A Team from Berwick, recorded the most individual laps.
The Rotary All Stars, captained by Allan Collier from Dandenong North, recorded the highest number of team laps walked.
The All Stars were also awarded the Best Baton award with their Relay For Life Grand Prix car.
The best decorated tent site award was presented to the Mauve Movers.
Relay for Life chairperson Deborah Ditchburn said she was delighted with the event.
“We all had a fabulous time. The weather was perfect, the effort put in by the teams was tremendous and we have all made a difference to so many lives,” she said.
“Although still a very young event, this year we have experienced a huge amount of growth with the number of participants who took part.
“The community is certainly becoming more aware of the event and the result this year in terms of the money our teams have raised is fantastic.
“The committee can now have a few months rest before they start work on the 2007 Casey Cardinia Relay For Life.”
