Students catch a bus to the future

STUDENTS from across Casey flocked to the Melbourne Careers and Employment Expo recently to learn about career pathways and employment options.
The SELLEN LCP (South East Local Learning and Employment Network, Local Community Partnership) assisted 490 local secondary students to travel to the events by chartering buses for interested young people to the WorldSkills Try a Trade exhibit and the Careers and Employment Expo.
The expo, which ran on 5 and 6 May, provided an opportunity for students to meet employers and training organisations to learn about career and employment opportunities.
At the Try a Trade exhibit various trade exhibitors offered students an opportunity to participate in small hands-on projects and get a taste for various occupations.
The trades represented ranged through building, hospitality, automotive and engineering, signwriting, floristry and administration with education providers and organisations from all over Australia coming to Melbourne.
The SELLEN region schools participating in the event were Chisholm Institute in Dandenong, Eumemmerring Secondary College Endeavour Hills campus, Eumemmerring Secondary College Hallam campus, Heatherhill Secondary College in Springvale, Kambrya College in Berwick, Lighthouse Christian College in Springvale and St Johns Regional College in Dandenong. SELLEN is a community-managed regional network made up of any local organisation in Melbourne’s south-east, interested in working to give 13 to 19-year-olds a better chance at successfully moving from school to work.
Funded by the Department of Education, Science and Training, SELLEN LCP supports secondary schools and training organisations in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia Shire and has more than 160 members among schools, TAFE, local businesses and youth welfare agencies.
