CASEY residents can express their opposition to nuclear power through a petition organised by a local MP.
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said Victorians were increasingly concerned the Federal Government would earmark sites in Victoria for nuclear power stations.
“This petition will let Victorians in the electorate of Narre Warren South express their opposition to nuclear power,” she said.
Ms Graley said the Bracks Government would continue to oppose nuclear power in Victoria and support safer forms of energy, such as clean coal, natural gas, wind and solar power.
Nuclear energy has been a topical issue in Casey over the past 12 months.
A research centre reported last July that Western Port was an ideal site for a nuclear power plant.
City of Casey Council passed a motion at a February meeting asking for a report on the positive and negative effects of a nuclear power station or nuclear waste storage facility in Casey.
Ms Graley said the petition could be signed in her electorate office at 4-418 Princes Highway, Narre Warren, or her mobile office on Saturday, 21 April at Eden Rise Shopping Centre in Berwick.
“I will then present this petition to State Parliament,” she said.
“Other MPs are also collecting signatures.
“This is a way that Casey residents can let the Federal Government know they want a nuclear-free Victoria,” she said.
