Show turns back clock

By Rebecca Fraser
STUDENTS at Narre Warren South P12 school are set to return to the time when shoulder pads were cool and spandex leggings a fashion must.
In the school’s upcoming musical Back to the ’80s, a 25strong cast will take audiences back to the era known for its infectious pop music and loud fashion statements.
Visual arts and performing arts coordinator Gina Miller said the storyline centred around a high school romance and featured many wellknown ’80s pop ballads.
The song Time of Your Life, made famous in the 1987 cult film Dirty Dancing, is featured in the production, as is Hey Mickey and other classics.
Ms Miller said this was the school’s first major production and everyone was looking forward to opening night.
She said the school had also set their sights on performing another musical next year with Oliver or The Mikado the options.
“We have been rehearsing all term and this has been a real learning experience for everyone.
“Everyone has been busy learning lines and the songs and it has taken a real commitment from everyone,” she said.
The musical’s director is drama teacher George Illiakis and Ms Miller said everyone was busy scouring local op shops in the hunt for ’80s couture.
“I have been trying to finalise costumes and search around,” she said.
“There is a prom scene in the musical so I have been looking for some big dresses and leg warmers are a bit hard to find these days.
“I have also been on the hunt for shoulder pads and I have been going opshopping each Saturday in the hunt for bright colours and leggings and tights in fluoro colours and spandex,” she said.
The production features students from grades five to 10 and tickets cost $8 for adults, $5 for students and $25 for families with two children and two adults.
Opening night is Friday, 25 November at 8pm followed by a performance on Sunday 27 November at 2.30pm at the Narre Warren P12 College Auditorium, Ormond Road Narre Warren South.
