Preps get a better start

PREPS at Narre Warren South P-12 College have slipped into school life with ease thanks to a successful program designed to ease the transition from kindergarten to the classroom.
Assistant principal Kerri Bolch said the Preps in Residency Program was the only one in the surrounding area that had an initiative specifically designed for school readiness.
“The program aims to make a link between preschool and school, so that the child has the best start for school,” she said.
Ms Bolch said kindergarten children attended school from term three and had a session a week in different learning areas such as literacy, numeracy, physical education, art and play.
Then, as term four progresses, the time spent increases to one day a week.
“The children are then integrated into the existing prep programs getting to know the students and the staff.
“By the time they leave the program they are much better prepared and are keen to get to school the following year,” Ms Bolch said.
Parent Teresa Marrama said she had found the Preps in Residency program positive in the way it had given her daughter Danyelle the confidence and preparation she needed to start school.
“The program also provided us parents with very informative information regarding the school and its policies,” she said
Narre Warren South P-12 School will hold a Preps in Residency information evening on Wednesday, 24 May from 6pm to 7pm in the school library. For further details contact early years coordinator Elene Archbald on 9704 3333.
