In 2006, more than 320,000 volunteers planted almost 1.6 million trees at more than 3600 sites throughout the country, and early indicators are that this year’s event would prove to have been an even greater success, an official said.
“The City of Casey already has a number of initiatives in place to encourage residents to plant native trees, such as the Arbor Week giveaway and the Growing a Green Web program, and the council was again pleased to assist Planet Ark with community plantings on National Tree Day,” said the city’s manager for engineering and environmental services, David Richardson.
“It was encouraging to see local school children and residents participating in the day, as not only have they contributed to the health of the local environment, but to a greener, brighter future for us all.”
The council hosted plantings for Doveton North Primary School students at Eumemmerring Creek, and for local volunteers at Eumemmerring Creek and Gunns Road Reserve.
Participants planted 4800 trees.
