KAMBRYA College students will make up a few of the thousands expected to ride their way to school as part of Ride2School Day on Wednesday.
Teachers and parents are also being encouraged to take part in the event, which has been designed to put exercise into children’s daily routine.
A group of active BMX-loving youngsters from the Berwick school will make up the majority of Kambrya’s contingent and will be rewarded for their efforts.
“We will be looking to put on a bit of a barbecue breakfast for the kids that take part,” teacher Bruce Sharp said.
Mr Sharp will also put the helmet on and pedal to school on the day.
“I might even bring along my tandem bike and show the students what it’s all about,” he said.
But bicycle action is not the only form of transport encouraged by Ride2School Day officials, with walking, skating or even scootering an option.
Bicycle Victoria chief executive Harry Barber said riding or walking to school made more sense than ever nowadays.
“Children are busting to get themselves to school and Ride2School Day is a great way of getting them on the road to independence and to all the benefits that brings,” he said.
Anyone wanting to know more about Ride2School Day or wanting a free promotional kit for their school can contact Bicycle Victoria on 1800 616 600 or visit www.ride2school.com.au.
