WHEN you speak to those involved in Hallam dance group NV US, their wish to get to Sydney is driven by far more than a desire to see the Harbour Bridge.
Led by an experienced volunteer choreographer in Rachael Kettle, the group is preparing to hit the Battleground dance competition held in Sydney during October to show the rest of Australia what they have to offer.
The group of Casey teenagers have been training from their Hallam base for more than two years and are hitting their straps, recently winning the Groove 2005 competition held in Essendon. But as reported in the News last week, the group is in need of a financial boost to help reach its potential.
Community liaison officer for the group Bev Davies said the group was in a race against time to fund its entry into the Sydney competition. She says that Sydney is more than just a chance to travel and dance for the group.
“It’s basically a culmination of twoandahalfyears working towards getting to some of these competitions like Sydney,” she said.
“To miss out would mean we’ve put all that hard work in, won in Essendon and then the kids wouldn’t get a chance to strut their stuff in Sydney.
“A lot of the crews they dance against are aged 1830. It’s a pretty big deal for these kids at this age (12 to 17) to get to where they have.”
Ms Davies said that the group was busily fundraising to reach the $4000 mark they need to make the trek to Sydney, but acknowledged that if the dancers’ parents have to keep shelling out everytime there’s a new tournament, it will restrict the group’s performance opportunities.
“Come hell or high water these kids are going to go I think,” Ms Davies said.
“Just please help us get there and lets see these kids do well.”
