WHEN Berwick woman Deb Harris jumped from nine years in the publishing and newspaper industry to the beauty industry, her peers saw it as a huge gamble.
But just two and a half years and a diploma of beauty therapy later, Mrs Harris has been vindicated, with her Williamstown salon Martine’s Beauty Therapy winning a national business excellence award.
The award, presented by one of the world’s leading skin care companies, Pevonia, in Sydney last Saturday night, is the highlight of a short but successful venture by Mrs Harris into the beauty industry.
“To come out of publishing industry and go into the beauty industry was quite a brave move my peers couldn’t figure out why I was doing it,” she said. “It was a hard decision to make, largely because I’ve got a family to support. But I’m a girl that likes a challenge.”
Mrs Harris said despite being a selfcritic, the award has enabled her to realise how much she has achieved in such a short time.
“I guess, I’m a very hard task master on myself, so to be recognised by your peers makes you feel like you have achieved,” she said.
Now the challenge for Mrs Harris will be to continue developing her business and look at expanding.
“Moving forward I think can probably build on that and having an award winning salon now, it will be better for the business.”
