HANDCRAFTED jewellery and multimedia works will feature in the last two exhibitions in the City of Casey Civic Centre Art Space program for 2005.
On display until 3 January at the Narre Warren council offices in Magid Drive, the exhibitions showcase the work of Casey silver- and goldsmith John White with multimedia works by students from Monash University’s Berwick campus.
City of Casey manager arts and leisure Robyn Bowen said the Civic Centre’s final exhibitions for the year should not be missed.
“The current Civic Centre Art Space exhibitions are worlds apart, demonstrating the diverse artistry in Casey.
“The Art Space features new technology multimedia art alongside stunning creations using the age-old technique of metalsmithing,” she said.
In their exhibition titled Suburbia: Time and Space, seven third-year students from Monash University’s School of Multimedia Systems in Berwick take inspiration from the local built environment, both residential and public, around the campus and the south eastern suburbs.
The exhibition features work by students Rhiannon Raleigh, Angus Bremner, Karen Duong, Anders Fagerhus, Marie Therese Bjornerud, Matt Rowe and Emily Ryan.
Suburbia: Time and Space aims to graphically express the architecture, colours and forms common to suburban spaces. The manner in which the suburbs grow and develop over time, together with shifts in architectural forms and the urban environment, is examined and explored using a variety of computer graphic applications.
Exhibited alongside is a collection of jewellery pieces by Berwick artist John White, entitled Silver and Gold.
Mr White, a gold and silversmith, specialises in sterling silver jewellery, using gold and other materials for special effect.
His designs are simple, focusing on the beauty of precious metals combined with quality craftsmanship.
Since his retirement from a career in teaching, he has developed a small home workshop, where he is able to focus on the pleasure of creating individual designs.
Many pieces in silver and gold feature a sea theme, some pieces being cast from cuttlefish, resulting in an extraordinarily delicate and unique effect.
