STUDENT safety outside Casey schools is being put on the agenda with warning signs on road surfaces a possibility.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood is calling for the skid-resistant coloured signs to be placed outside schools and has raised the issue in Parliament.
Mr Wood said the warning signs, available in several highly visible colours, provided clear warnings for motorists as they approached the area.
“The more warnings and markings on the road around schools the better,” he said.
“You see great benefits from this type of signs.”
Casey Council is trialing the signs in several locations, including one outside Narre Warren South P-12 College.
The non-slip surface signs offer motorists clear warnings about speed limits, pedestrian crossing zone, bus and cycle lanes and other safety issues.
Mr Wood said he was trying to implement a similar funding program for the safety signs as there currently was for black spot traffic sites.
“With the black spot program you can only really get funding if the accidents have already happened,” he said.
“Hopefully a separate type of program can be set up that allows councils to apply for funding for the road surface signs.
“This would allow councils to decide where to locate the signs in their area.”
